Enhancing capacity, flexibility and sustainability: three advantages that MARELEC’s portion lines deliver to salmon giant MOWI

Next to optimizing capacity, flexibility and reducing giveaway, Marelec’s intelligent portioning solutions enable Mowi to contribute to its main sustainability principles.

At Mowi Belgium, the production and sale of fresh, frozen, coated and smoked fish and fish products is the specialty of one of its two establishments in Bruges and Ostend. Covering a production of 100.000 portions a day from its site in Bruges, Mowi Belgium specializes in the supply of salmon and a large range of whitefish species, pre-packed or in bulk packaging, to retail and the food service industry.

In 2011, Mowi Belgium was confronted with a common challenge: the high giveaway in its food-processing line. The equipment it used at the time was unable to support the company’s high standards for sustainability – a challenge that was overcome by working with Marelec. Mowi persisted in investing in Marelec's high-tech processing solutions over the years to further enhance capacity and flexibility, encouraging it to eventually purchase multiple orders on a global scale.

Marelec provided a solution that included portioning lines, each of which is made up of a density infeed weigher, a portioner and a distribution system, which transports goods to the various packing lines. Despite the market’s constantly changing needs, Mowi is able to respond quickly due to the flexibility of the portion line. The dynamic process flow enables production volumes to be maintained, along with a modest and consistent giveaway, even when portions are cut smaller.

The Marelec portion line is excellent at distributing the residual weight between head and tail, via the portion trimmer and adapted software, so that we can maximize the value of our by-products and minimize giveaway. This also contributes particularly well to some of the sustainability principles that Mowi upholds, such as economic growth, innovation and responsible production and consumption.
